The air is getting hotter, there’s a rumbling in the skies, I’ve been wading through the high muddy water, with the heat rising in my eyes; Every day your memory grows dimmer, it doesn’t haunt me like it did before, I’ve been walking through the middle of nowhere, Trying to get to heaven before they close the door

Him Indoors is not a fan of Christmas festive season. He’s not a misery – although that’s what he tells people as part of his cover story – but these days are his “sad days” he told me. Most of his close friends know and understand when he almost disappears from view.

These are the days his lady had to be taken into hospital and where she eventually died. These “sad days” encompass Christmas, her birthday, their wedding anniversary and New Year, ie party time over many years. He’s told me some funny stories about them, whilst when he starts talking about sharing Christmas for so many years with former neighbours Malcolm & Sandra even I cannot move for wagging my tail!!

I’m getting a lot of cuddles and head stroking at the moment, which is all very well but I’m not an affectionate creature (although I do love him in reality but best not to let him know) and it can all be a bit much. I await the food that surely will deservedly arrive for such loyalty at some point.

I heard him speaking to my lovely friend Sarah – who has been taking me for walks over the last icy week – telling her that part of the reason he loathes snow and ice so much is that it reminds him of the trips to the hospital to see his missus that time.

This weather has been a real pain, Him Indoors became cemented to the settee even more than usual because nobody bothered to clear the pavements in town. Obviously it was all my fault because apparently I could pull him over when he walks me! Thank goodness for Sarah (and other mates Rachel and Karen) who took me out to chase a ball and run about in the snow. I’ve always enjoyed the snow but less as I’ve grown older. I really think it’s time to leave it to the youngsters to roll around in it.

Meanwhile we’ve had a bit of a bad time with the football. I simply can’t repeat what was shouted at the television when our team lost to Manchester City (incidentally, I should apologise for my rather “rough” language last time when I became emotional about Brexit situation) but The Boss is not a happy bunny. He refers to them as “Qatar”, in the same malevolent way as he refers to Chelsea as “the Russians”.

But what makes me laugh is he also calls Barcelona “Qatar” and Paris St Germaine as “Qatar”. Does anybody else think his “beautiful game” (as he used to call it) has become “a great big global business for laundering money combined with Arab states seeking good PR to hide their murderous regimes” to quote him.

I must tell you all though, he has been ecstatic at the number of Christmas cards , notes & letters that have arrived through the letter-box. He almost dances around the room when the post-lady arrives. It is so nice that so many people care!

In this frantic world, the fact someone has taken the time and trouble (and expense) to send such things brings a warm glow. We need a warm glow because it’s been freezing cold here!

I am eagerly awaiting his trip to the butcher’s for his Christmas order because he normally buys loads too much, which means I get tit-bits of the highest quality. He did whisper in my ear “we’re having chicken”; this means it’s bonanza time for me.

Then he brought me down to earth, by telling me that my mates Eric & Dilys, our beloved fish suppliers, have retired. In truth, this was the moment, combined with his “sad days” that he sank on to the settee, head in hands, and asked for my advice. “What are we to do?” “Life will unbearable” he spoke, in a hushed voice. Me? I’ve been on the internet to find an alternative – fast! Life without quality fish? I may need to find a new owner!

Woof! Woof!
