Him Indoors has been fretting a bit as this lockdown continues to drive us all insane. I’m ok in truth because I’m a bit of an anti-social creature due to my undoubted superiority to other dogs. But Him Indoors, although blessed with the benefit of my company, really needs his meetings with his pals to stay on an even keel.
We are being very dedicated to our isolation, even though it is mentally tough. We need people. Him Indoors grasp of modern technology, whilst perhaps better than most, falls a long way short of “expertise”. This can result in some amusing moments when people phone him on Facetime and he’s actually in the bathroom. I lay there in the doorway watching his desperate attempts to NOT answer the phone whilst the reality was that he has already pressed the green button and pictures are being transmitted. Hahaha I laugh at his panic, mind you if he decides to (gently) kick me out of the way in his attempt to sort the problem, it is much less amusing.
We’ve had a few moments with online shopping as well. Now I should explain. We don’t do supermarkets. Ever. Not at all. Never. The Old Boy has been shopping on-line for everything – groceries, clothes, shoes, wine, meat, the lot – for many years. His lovely lamented Chris had given up on asking him to go shopping many many years ago. He only enjoyed clothes shopping for her, and he tells me he was both good and generous!!! Friends, was he?
Anyway, when he established that the fact he was a regular on-line customer mattered not a fig, he was not happy! Actually, he fairly freaked out. Part of him was happy, he told me, not to be classed as “vulnerable”. But equally, he felt his age and his long-term commitment to on-line shopping should have meant something. My friends, it mattered not at all!
However, by good fortune and a lack of sleep at 4.00am two weeks ago, he managed to get a delivery slot this coming Saturday. I have no idea what is arriving but he promised me that “you’re ok spoilt one, I’ve ordered all your stuff” – whatever that means!!!
I suppose like all of you, I’ve being taking this lockdown opportunity to have a bit of a review of life, in my case inspired by Dylan’s “Murder Most Foul” song. I own up, these moments are scary. Its my first time but Him Indoors has been here before, so he told me. Our “intimate” moments take place as I lay on top of the settee, my head on his shoulder. I’m never a springer spaniel in those moments, I’m his best friend.
Our conversations always remind me (whatever is said) that life is fragile. It is complicated. That we are all different, that as The Maestro says ‘you are right from your side and i am right from mine”. He tells me that he is convinced that Nature has had enough. Nature has given human beings enough opportunity to repair our damage and we’ve failed. This is Nature’s way of stopping the world in its tracks and giving Earth a rest from us. I ask you, who am I to argue with that theory?
Him Indoors confesses to not understanding economics but reckons the current capitalism system has been blown up by all this. (I think part of him is in wishful thinking mode). He speaks of billionaires not wanting to help their employees, that individual riches are too great whilst children die on the streets. Perhaps he’s turned into a communist!!!! He reckons that when Health Services all over the world need help, the least these mega-rich people should be doing is buying equipment for them all. He has never been a fan of a certain Mr Branson but his idea that Basher Boris should just take all the wealth from him and leave him just a million quid does strike me as possibly mildly eccentric.
Somehow he’s coping without his football although he is not too impressed with how football organisations (and clubs) are dealing with it all. They are another bunch of wildly rich individuals (& companies) in the top leagues who seem to be only interested in taking from society and giving back nothing. He does concede that certain individuals are supporting their communities (mostly individual players) but is disgusted that these clubs keep paying their players whilst seeking money from the government for their non-playing staff.
I’m off now to be a misery and nag The Boss for my tea. I always start being difficult late afternoon to try and get myself fed a bit earlier. Doesn’t always work but you have to try, don’t you?
Stay safe, stay warm and stay at home. I don’t want any of my friends to suffer this virus, which from what I have read seems a pretty nasty piece of work.
Back soon!
Woof! Woof!
