“How far are you all going?” Ruby asked with a sigh. “We’re going all the way till the wheels fall off and burn, Till the sun peels the paint and the seat covers fade and the water moccasins die” Ruby just smiled and said “Ah, you know some babies never leave”

Football. Non-stop football. Plus Golf. Plus Cricket. More football. Occasional tennis. Then yesterday, the France travelogue known as the Tour de France!

I’ve never had to watch so much sport on the television. Its non-stop, 24 hours a day. Let’s be honest, there is only so long even I can sleep for before I need to move. Stretch. Walk.  Him Indoors is addicted to the World Cup, this became very clear quite quickly in proceedings.

He’s not addicted to the commentators. Nor the pundits, about whom a number of them he is very rude. He is often rude about some of the players. He is rather a fan of Mr Ronaldo, to whom he refers as CR7. As we watched Argentina succumb rather pathetically to Croatia I hear him murmur “ best player in the world. I rather think not, that contest has been settled now”.

We did both get excited as England scored their goals. At least Him Indoors did, jumping up and knocking me off the settee. Did you know he went to EVERY England game in 1966, including the Final, with a couple of mates. It appears they “borrowed” the St Georges Flag that belonged to St Johns Church in Worcester for the Final, and you can see it clearly over the players tunnel. It proves he was once young and not always an old grump.

But we understand here in Pump Court that in the order of life, football is in reality low down the list of importance.

Fairly obviously this has been reinforced by the recent death of our good friend Barry. Him Indoors is feeling very privileged having been asked to provide some words at Barry’s funeral which took place last week.

When you lose somebody who was such a good friend it rather puts life in perspective. We all like nice houses, fine furniture, expensive holidays in far-off places, dinner in nice restaurants etc etc but actually none of those things matter compared to your friends, I mean your REAL CLOSE friends and your family and your library of memories.

So often life moves so fast we forget our friends, some of our family. We get caught in the “glamour” of our lives, or the hum-drum of our lives, and don’t make time for the people who really matter.  Even worse, we forget to tell them “we love them” or “you’re important” or “I care about you”. So, maybe, they never know for certain how important they are to you.

Worse case scenario is forgetting to tell that really special one, the one you really do love that “I love you”. Don’t assume, The Boss says, don’t assume.

I’ve heard him tell people that one of the great things about being given time with Chris, even knowing it was so limited, was that it gave them the time to let each other know what they meant to each other. That actually they were lucky, because so often it is snatched away and the chance is gone for ever.

Him Indoors constantly reminds me as we talk that life is fragile, whatever our age. It can be taken away in an instant and those folks with whom you’ve argued, or forgotten, never meet you again.

He isn’t very happy with the weather. His in-built “grump” comes out best in hot weather. He is a proper misery in the heat and the dust because he still suffers with hay fever. It affects his eyes these days but of course he’s such an idiot he keeps rubbing them. I have to suffer as he tells me it is far too hot for a dog to be going outside, adding that I will burn my paws on the pavements. So much for getting a view from the pavement for me.

I did injure my leg last weekend but not seriously. I think I pulled a muscle trying to be clever jumping up a step but it has taken all my “spring” out of being a Springer and I have to ensure I have my “sad face” in place for him to pick me up when needed (I am a trifle heavy and he is a trifle fat and unfit with a dodgy back!).

Woof! Woof!
