Restless Farewell

You need the time and stay behind

And since my feet are now fast

And point away from the past

I’ll bid farewell and be down the line

And no word is possessed by no special friend

And though the line is cut

It ain’t quite the end

I’ll just bid farewell till we meet again

It has been a very difficult 10 days in Rumpy Pumpy Court since the lovely Zimmy arrived. He has been made so welcome everywhere (especially in the social media world) when Him Indoors posted a little video of him for everybody to see.
But the little man has had real difficulty settling in. He hasn’t got his toilet training sorted and so The Boss had several accidents from him to clear up around the place. What was worse for Zimmy was that he seemed unwilling to go to the toilet whilst on a lead & His Nibs didn’t feel able to let him off in case he ran away again.

Because not all exit points at Rumpy Pumpy can be closed His Nibs couldn’t take the risk of him being off the lead in the courtyard either. He never let me out on my own you know, he was always with me but I’m a natural home-dog. I wasn’t going anywhere I can tell you, I knew where my bread was buttered!
Zimmy was full of anxieties and as the days passed it became more and more obvious that he had been badly treated in his previous life. Him Indoors was getting really stressed because he could tell Zimmy was struggling and this in turn made Zimmy even more concerned himself. We dogs can feel the anxieties of our owners.
Zimmy needs a long long time and lots of patience to work through his many issues. Therefore, after much discussion with his rescuers, we agreed Zimmy should return to Hampshire for training on the farm (which also has an enclosed garden).
Him Indoors is very sad it didn’t work out for Zimmy but is convinced it is the right thing for the little chap. He can “find himself” in a safe environment and learn how to play and be happy for perhaps the first time in his life.
He has settled in really well at the farm and is obviously very happy, running around the garden without a lead. There are other dogs to play with as well, which it has become obvious Zimmy needs for him to be truly happy. Him Indoors misses the cuddles Zimmy gave him laying on the settee with him, but his only concern was the best life for Zimmy. He is a lovely chap, he has a real affectionate nature, which was why I thought he would be perfect for The Boss but it was, sadly, not to be.

I’m not sure whether His Nibs will actually get another furry friend. He became very stressed with worry about Zimmy and I have to be very careful up here if I do find him another friend. He has all his top memories of life with me and that may well be the best thing for him.

The Boss is not very mobile these days, I can tell looking down that his knees are a real problem for him to say nothing of his dodgy back! Poor old sod but you can’t stop the ageing process I suppose. I should know!

He’s had a little mishap with his car as well in the midst of life with Zimmy. Turning into Rumpy Pumpy he managed to drive into a wall. I know I shouldn’t laugh but I admit to smiling a lot up here by the Rainbow Bridge. He made a proper mess of the offside front wing, so much so its an insurance job. He can be quite entertaining at times.

This little contretemps has resulted in our friend Mr Bridges being chauffeur for His Nibs for a couple of days. A trip to the dentist for Himself had an obvious end because it was the first day the pubs reopened. The Great Western simply had to be visited by these two pseudo-young old boys.

The next day The Boss was taken for his 2nd Covid vaccination. Despite the vaccination being in Stourport they managed to establish that The Great Western was open again.

I have to report – it would be remiss of me not to – that they only had a couple of pints each time, a remarkable act of restraint that from up here appears worthy of some sort of medal. It would also be remiss not to report that His Nibs was less than impressed with the state of the inside of the oft mentioned Mr Bridges vehicle, being heard to ask at one time “do you always keep a bicycle in the rear seats Steve?”. I leave it to your imagination to consider the condition of the rest of the interior.

Finally folks I return to my heavenly pavement slumberd with the thought that both these cheery good friends are at least smiling again at the return of the pub, although the return of Zimmy has inevitably rather taken the edge off the happiness stakes in these recent days. But the sight of that dog playing with his new pals keeps the smiles alive.

Woof! Woof!

Once again thank you Dylan you really make my day. I was sorry to hear how poor Zimmy had a terrible beginning before he arrived here but he does sound rather happy on the farm.
Enjoy your retirement on the Rainbow Bridge.

Not everything works out. I know you tried. Zimmy’s happiness was always your goal and you realized that. Let’s hope the company of playmates will help his recovery. Please keep writing Dylan Dog!
