Restless Farewell

Life seems to be delivering some of the saddest times to me and Him Indoors. Another fine friend, known for over 40 years to the Boss, has left our world and our world is much the poorer for the loss of Malcolm Jackson.

Oh all the money that in my whole life I did spend, Be it mine right or wrongfully

I let it slip gladly to my friends, To tie up the time most forcefully

But the bottles are done, We’ve killed each one

And the table’s full and overflowed, and the corner sign

Says it’s closing time, So I’ll bid farewell and be down the road

Oh every foe that I ever faced, The cause was there before we came

And every cause that I ever fought, I fought it full without regret or shame

But the dark does die, As the curtain is drawn and somebody’s eyes

Must meet the dawn, and if I see the day

I’d only have to stay, So I’ll bid farewell in the night and be gone

Oh every thought that’s strung a knot in my mind, I might go insane if it couldn’t be sprung

But it’s not to stand naked under unknowing eyes, It’s for myself and my friends my stories are sung

But the time ain’t tall yet on time you depend, And no word is possessed by no special friend

And though the line, is cut

It ain’t quite the end, I’ll just, Bid farewell till we meet again

Oh a false clock tries to tick out my time to disgrace, Distract and bother me

And the dirt of gossip blows into my face, And the dust of rumours covers me

But if the arrow is straight and the point is slick, It can pierce through the dust no matter how thick

So I’ll make my stand, and remain

As I am, and bid farewell and not give a damn.

Malcolm was an incredibly generous man, who did lots of things for people without seeking attention or glory for his generosity. He was much more sensitive than a lot of people realized. He & Sandra were neighbours to Him Indoors & Christine for all their happy times at “Isis”. They watched each other’s children grow up together, loved them unconditionally. Malcolm wept with The Boss when Chris died, Sandra too. These were special people.

Malcolm really was a one-off, a legend. His business based upon 2ndhand tv’s and videos prospered over the years, despite plenty of setbacks along the way. Him Indoors reckons he was the best salesman he has ever encountered in his whole life. He recounted a number of tales of some of the deals Malcolm had pulled off, often taking a huge gamble by doing it.

The Boss went to Malcolm’s funeral on Friday with his son Robert, the church over-flowing with people many of whom Malcolm would have helped over the years. Apparently over-flowing with stories as well, tales of that hidden generosity which Malcolm gave so freely.

It seems there were several trips to France wine-buying with the Jacksons, and those trips inevitably led to tears of laughter when discussed over the years with them.

So, for the second time recently, my little report is less laugh and more cry. I will try and make you smile more next time.

Meanwhile, tell those you love how much you actually do because this life is fragile and unpredictable. Mend those rows, bury those disputes, hold each other tight and enjoy life.

God bless.

Woof! Woof!
