Sick man looking for the doctors cure, Lookin’ at his hands for the lines that were, And into every masterpiece of literature, For dignity

All I can say is thank goodness for music! It’s the music that seems to be keeping Him Indoors sane as we go through all this social distancing stuff. Actually, he’s mostly been very good although I have to tell you my friends, he and I had a bit of an incident the other day that I found upsetting.

It was all about my dinner. I would ask you to put this story in context. As you know, I am a cut above normal dogs. Much advanced in intelligence, it is fair to say that over the years I have developed a taste for the finer things of life. Like his food. Which, it seems to me, is a significant advance on my food.

I find little wrong therefore in refusing to settle on a 2nd best dog’s dinner when Him Indoors is cooking himself a rather nice looking fillet steak. But this week it seems I pushed it just a bit too much. I get that he is under pressure – in life, not just cooking – but I do feel he over reacted by picking up my bowl and shoving it under my nose, whilst pointing out in a VERY loud voice “this is yours, this is yours”. ! Now I confess I’m not sure at which point the bowl slipped from his fingers but, as it gently curled its way downwards to the floor, it was the point that I realised I had over played my hand.

As the food shot out all over his kitchen floor I retreated, at pace, to the living room. The fact Him Indoors grabbed at my collar, missed and crashed downwards to join my dinner on the floor didn’t bode well for my future.

Life goes on. He scraped up my dinner, muttering about sending me to the glue factory and over-spoilt pets. At least he put my dinner back in my bowl. I half-expected him to throw it at me! I was so shocked that I just ignored him the rest of the evening. But he didn’t give me any steak, the bastard!

We are friends again now, you will be pleased to hear, although I made him suffer on the next day by refusing all offers of friendship until it was tea-time again.

We’ve had a couple of days of cooking going on as well, with some tasty looking cottage pies put in the freezer along with some chilli. He didn’t let me lick the pans, which I felt was bit off but he reckoned the chilli would be a bit strong for me. I’m not so sure it wasn’t a legacy from the bowl incident. He was making curried roasted cauliflower soup today but I knew I had no hope of getting any of that, I’m banned from curries. He seems to think it’s not good for my bottom, whatever that means.

Last night and today has been music. I love it when he goes into music mood. Partly because he’s so useless with the remote control for YouTube its great entertainment for me to watch him trying to work out how to find what he wants. But secondly, because like Him Indoors I love music and I love what he likes (inevitable I suppose, a psychiatrist would probably say I’ve been brain-washed). Those sad people who don’t “get” Dylan would definitely say I’m scarred by association. What do they know?

Enough. The music?  The other night, late on, we had Jason Isbell in concert at House of Blues. His lovely wife Amanda was with the band that night. I thought The Boss had it a bit loud for midnight but our neighbour Malcolm didn’t say anything the following day when we met him so I guess it was ok. I love Mr Isbell and he gets played a lot.

Him Indoors was still musically motivated the next day. What a day we had as well. We started off with more live Jason Isbell , then followed it up with Tom Petty (how sad he’s no longer with us) at Jazzfest, New Orleans which had the Old Boy reminiscing to me about when he went there to see Lucinda Williams and Cyndi Lauper. Later we had a big chunk of Bruce playing there was well with his Sessions Band in 2006, followed by Cyndi. I love Cyndi, she appears completely crackers but I’ve seen and heard lots of her and she is wickedly good. We finished off with Grace Potter, who I’m pretty certain the Old Boy puts on because he loves her stage outfits!

There is a downside to his music moments, and that is because he has to hug me frequently because some of this music brings him memories of dancing around their lounge at “Isis” with his Chris. I can’t really remember her because I was only a puppy and didn’t see much of her because I didn’t live with them. I came to live with Him Indoors to help deal with his loneliness after she died. I can’t really do the dancing these days, my back legs are feeling the pace. I don’t mind the hugs but I don’t like The Boss being a bit sad when he’s enjoying himself. It’s really the only time I glimpse maybe he’s lonely but I am such a soft old thing I could be imagining things.

All this nonsense will tell you that together we are doing ok in amongst this distancing / lockdown adventure. Our morning walks are pretty uneventful and so our isolation at home is enlivened by chats with our neighbours at various times. In this good weather we’ve even been sitting outside reading.

I hope all you lovely folks are keeping safe and well, I’ll drop you all another note in two or three days.

Woof! Woof!
